‘9’-WEST 48th and WEST 54th STREET LINES (1932-1934)

 

Formed from the W. 48th and W. 54th Street, branches of the ‘M’-Grand and Moneta Avenue Line, becoming operational June 12, 1932.

 

ROUTE:  From W. 54th Street and Crenshaw Avenue, east on 54th to South Broadway, north on Broadway, North Broadway Place, Main Street and Spring Street to W. 2nd Street.  West on 2nd to Broadway, south on Broadway to Pico Boulevard, west on Pico to Grand Avenue, south on Grand to Santa Barbara Avenue (King Boulevard), west on Santa Barbara to Hoover Street.  South on Hoover to W. 48th Street, west on 48th and right-of-way along 48th to Crenshaw Avenue.

 

NOVEMBER 11, 1934:  Rerouted and renamed ‘9’-West 48th and East 2nd Street Line.

 

‘9’-WEST 48th and EAST 2nd STREET LINE (1934-1939)

 

Formed from the 48th Street branch of the ‘9’-West 48th and West 54th Street Line and the Santa Fe Depot branch of the ‘7’-South Broadway Line.  Start of service November 11, 1934.

 

ROUTE:  From W. 48th Street and Crenshaw Avenue, east on 48th to Hoover Street, north on Hoover to Santa Barbara Avenue, east on Santa Barbara to Grand Avenue.  North on Grand to Pico Boulevard, east on Pico to Broadway, north on Broadway to W 2nd Street, southeast on 2nd and Traction Avenue to E. 3rd Street.  East on 3rd to Santa Fe Avenue, north on Santa Fe to E. 2nd Street (Santa Fe Railway La Grande Depot.) Line on W. 54th Street transferred to the ‘8’-West 54th and Civic Center Line.

 

SEPTEMBER 24, 1939:  Rerouted and renamed the ‘9’-West 48th, Lincoln Park and Griffin Avenue Line.

 

‘9’-WEST 48th LINCOLN PARK AND GRIFFIN AVENUE LINE (1939-1948)

 

Formed from the ‘9’-West 48th and East 2nd Street Line, the Griffin Avenue branch of the ‘2’-Griffin Avenue and Crown Hill Line and the North Broadway branch of the ‘10’-North Broadway and West Vernon Line.  Service begun September 24, 1939.  Line to Santa Fe Station abandoned with the opening of Union Passenger Terminal.

 

ROUTE:  From W. 48th Street and Crenshaw Avenue east to Hoover Street, north on Hoover to Santa Barbara Avenue, east on Santa Barbara to Grand, north on Grand Avenue to Pico Boulevard, east on Pico to Broadway, north on Broadway to the junction with Pasadena Avenue, where line split.  One branch went east on Pasadena and Avenue 26 to Griffin Avenue, north on Griffin to Montecito Avenue; the other continued east on Broadway to Lincoln Park Boulevard, south on Lincoln Park to Mission Road.

 

APRIL 18, 1948:  Service on the Griffin Avenue branch abandoned.  Renamed ‘9’-West 48th Street and Lincoln Park Line.

 

‘9’-WEST 48th STREET AND LINCOLN PARK LINE (1948-1955)

 

Formed from the ‘9’-West 48th, Lincoln Park and Griffin Line, minus the Griffin Avenue branch.

 

ROUTE:  From Crenshaw Boulevard and W. 48th Street, east on 48th to Hoover Street, north on Hoover to Santa Barbara Avenue, east on Santa Barbara to Grand Avenue.  North on Grand to Pico Boulevard, east on Pico to Broadway, north and east on Broadway to Lincoln Heights Boulevard, south on Lincoln Heights to Mission Road.

 

JUNE 2 and 3, 1949:  Due to the demolition of the Broadway Tunnel between California Street and Sunset Boulevard, the line was diverted around the site on a temporary “shoo-fly” track.

 

MAY 5, 1955:  Rail service abandoned.
