‘9’-WEST 48^th and WEST 54^th STREET LINES (1932-1934)

Formed from the W. 48^th and W. 54^th Street, branches of the ‘M’-Grand and Moneta Avenue Line, becoming operational June 12, 1932.

ROUTE: From W. 54^th Street and Crenshaw Avenue, east on 54^th to South Broadway, north on Broadway, North Broadway Place, Main Street and Spring Street to W. 2^nd Street. West on 2^nd to Broadway, south on Broadway to Pico Boulevard, west on Pico to Grand Avenue, south on Grand to Santa Barbara Avenue (King Boulevard), west on Santa Barbara to Hoover Street. South on Hoover to W. 48^th Street, west on 48^th and right-of-way along 48^th to Crenshaw Avenue.

NOVEMBER 11, 1934: Rerouted and renamed ‘9’-West 48^th and East 2^nd Street Line.

‘9’-WEST 48^th and EAST 2^nd STREET LINE (1934-1939)

Formed from the 48^th Street branch of the ‘9’-West 48^th and West 54^th Street Line and the Santa Fe Depot branch of the ‘7’-South Broadway Line. Start of service November 11, 1934.

ROUTE: From W. 48^th Street and Crenshaw Avenue, east on 48^th to Hoover Street, north on Hoover to Santa Barbara Avenue, east on Santa Barbara to Grand Avenue. North on Grand to Pico Boulevard, east on Pico to Broadway, north on Broadway to W 2^nd Street, southeast on 2^nd and Traction Avenue to E. 3^rd Street. East on 3^rd to Santa Fe Avenue, north on Santa Fe to E. 2^nd Street (Santa Fe Railway La Grande Depot.) Line on W. 54^th Street transferred to the ‘8’-West 54^th and Civic Center Line.

SEPTEMBER 24, 1939: Rerouted and renamed the ‘9’-West 48^th, Lincoln Park and Griffin Avenue Line.

‘9’-WEST 48^th LINCOLN PARK AND GRIFFIN AVENUE LINE (1939-1948)

Formed from the ‘9’-West 48^th and East 2^nd Street Line, the Griffin Avenue branch of the ‘2’-Griffin Avenue and Crown Hill Line and the North Broadway branch of the ‘10’-North Broadway and West Vernon Line. Service begun September 24, 1939. Line to Santa Fe Station abandoned with the opening of Union Passenger Terminal.

ROUTE: From W. 48^th Street and Crenshaw Avenue east to Hoover Street, north on Hoover to Santa Barbara Avenue, east on Santa Barbara to Grand, north on Grand Avenue to Pico Boulevard, east on Pico to Broadway, north on Broadway to the junction with Pasadena Avenue, where line split. One branch went east on Pasadena and Avenue 26 to Griffin Avenue, north on Griffin to Montecito Avenue; the other continued east on Broadway to Lincoln Park Boulevard, south on Lincoln Park to Mission Road.

APRIL 18, 1948: Service on the Griffin Avenue branch abandoned. Renamed ‘9’-West 48^th Street and Lincoln Park Line.

‘9’-WEST 48^th STREET AND LINCOLN PARK LINE (1948-1955)

Formed from the ‘9’-West 48^th, Lincoln Park and Griffin Line, minus the Griffin Avenue branch.

ROUTE: From Crenshaw Boulevard and W. 48^th Street, east on 48^th to Hoover Street, north on Hoover to Santa Barbara Avenue, east on Santa Barbara to Grand Avenue. North on Grand to Pico Boulevard, east on Pico to Broadway, north and east on Broadway to Lincoln Heights Boulevard, south on Lincoln Heights to Mission Road.

JUNE 2 and 3, 1949: Due to the demolition of the Broadway Tunnel between California Street and Sunset Boulevard, the line was diverted around the site on a temporary “shoo-fly” track.

MAY 5, 1955: Rail service abandoned.
