GRIFFITH AND GRIFFIN LINE (1910-1920)

 

Formed from the Los Angeles Railway Company’s Griffith Avenue Line and the northern section of the Griffin Avenue and Jefferson Street Line.

 

ROUTE:  From Vernon and McKinley Avenues, north on McKinley to Jefferson Avenue, west on Jefferson to Griffith Avenue.  North on Griffith to E. 14th Street, west on 14th to Stanford Avenue, north on Stanford to E. 12th Street.  East on 12th to Main Street, north on Main to Sunset Boulevard, west on Sunset to North Broadway, north on Broadway, Pasadena Avenue and Avenue 26 to Griffin Avenue, north on Griffin to Montecito Avenue.

 

1919:  Extended east on Vernon Avenue from McKinley Avenue to Pacific Boulevard, then east and south on Pacific to Florence Avenue, east on Florence to Seville Street, south on Seville to Santa Ana Street.

 

MAY 9, 1920:  Cut back to original terminal at Vernon and McKinley Avenue and named the ‘G’-Line.

‘G’-GRIFFITH AND GRIFFIN LINE (1920-1926)

 

Formed from the Griffith and Griffin Line north of McKinley and Vernon Avenues, portion on Vernon Avenue and Pacific Boulevard made parts of the ‘V’-Line and ‘J’-Line.

 

ROUTE:  From Vernon and McKinley Avenues north on McKinley to Jefferson Avenue, west on Jefferson to Griffith Avenue, north on Griffith to East 14th Street, west on 14th to Stanford Avenue.  North on Stanford to East 12th Street, west on 12th to South Main Street, north on Main to Spring Street.  North on Spring to North Main Street, north on Main to Sunset Boulevard, west on Sunset to Broadway, north on Broadway to Pasadena Avenue, east on Pasadena and Avenue 26 to Griffin Avenue, north on Griffin to Montecito Drive.

 

JULY 13,1924:  Due to storm-drain construction along Jefferson, (west of McKinley Avenue) certain cars were re-routed on what was normally ‘K’-Line trackage, west from McKinley Avenue on Jefferson Avenue to Central Avenue, south on Central to East 41st Street, east on 41st to Ascot Avenue.

 

DECEMBER 28, 1924:  Construction work on Jefferson completed, lines restored to normal routing.

 

APRIL 6, 1926:  Due to rebuilding of Spring Street, line rerouted from West 1st and Spring Streets, east on 1st to North Main Street, and then via normal route to Griffin Avenue and Montecito Drive.

 

JULY 4, 1926:  North end of line rerouted to take over service of the Angeleno Heights Shuttle Line.  Line renamed G-Griffith and Angeleno Heights Line.  Service on the Griffin Avenue portion of the line transferred to the ‘A-2’ West Adams and Griffin Avenue Line.

 

‘G’ GRIFFITH AND ANGELENO heights LINE (1926-1932)

 

Formed from the Griffith Avenue portion of the Griffith and Griffin Line and the Angeleno Heights Shuttle Line, service starts July 4, 1926.

 

ROUTE:  From Vernon and McKinley Avenues, north on McKinley to East 14th Street, west on 14th to Stanford Avenue, north on Stanford to E. 12th to South Main Street.  North on Main to Temple Street where line was split, one branch going west on Temple to Hill Street, north on Hill to California Street, west on California to Bunker Hill Avenue.  North on Bunker Hill to Boston Street, west on Boston to Figueroa Street, north on Figueroa to Alpine Street, west on Alpine to Beaudry Avenue, south on Beaudry to Bellevue, west on Bellevue to Edgeware Road, north on Edgeware to Douglas Avenue.  North on Douglas to Kensington Road; the other branch continued north on Main to Sunset Boulevard, west on Sunset to North Spring Street, north on Spring to Ord Street.

 

OCTOBER 19, 1927:  Trackage on Edgeware Road and Douglas Avenue to Kensington Road transferred to ‘C’-Crown Hill and Temple Street Line, service on ‘G’-Line terminated at Bellevue Avenue and Edgeware Road, service on the North Spring Street branch dropped.

 

July 20, 1930:  Service on the Angeleno Heights branch cut back to Sunset and Beaudry, trackage from there to Bellevue Avenue and Edgeware Road abandoned.

 

MAY 21, 1932:  Line rerouted in down-town area, north on Broadway Place and Broadway to Temple Street.  Then following regular route to Sunset Boulevard and Beaudry Avenue.

 

JUNE 12, 1932: Angeleno Heights portion of the line transferred to the ‘A’ West Adams and Angeleno Heights Line.  Line rerouted back to Spring Street Terminal via Main Street and Sunset Boulevard to North Spring and Ord Street, and renamed ‘G’ Griffith Avenue Line.

 

‘G’-GRIFFITH AVENUE LINE (1932-1946)

 

Formed from the Main Street section of the ‘G’-Griffith and Angeleno Heights Line, service starting June 12, 1932.

 

ROUTE:  From Vernon and McKinley Avenues, north on McKinley to East 14th Street, west on 14th to Stanford Avenue, north on Stanford to E. 12th Street.  East on 12th to south Main Street, north on Main to Sunset Boulevard, west on Sunset to North Spring Street, north on Spring to Ord Street.  No transit service nights or on Sunday.

 

JUNE 2, 1935:  Sunday service started.

 

MARCH 1, 1938:  Service cut back from Spring Street terminal to East 12th Street and Stanford Avenue, line operates as shuttle, south on Stanford to East 14th, east on 14th to Griffith Avenue, south on Griffith to Jefferson Avenue, east on Jefferson to McKinley Avenue, south on McKinley to Vernon Avenue.

 

JUNE 30, 1946:  Rail service abandoned.
