“A CHRONOLOGY OF CHANGES IN
SAN FRANCISCO STREET ROUTES
SINCE 1944"
By Addison H. Laflin, Jr.
There has always been something
unusual and fascinating about the streetcar routes of San Francisco. Call it atmosphere perhaps. For the railfan the Phrase “Bay City” will
always conjure up memories of clumsy but picturesque “white front” cars, of
amazing interwoven networks of lines clustered closely together, of grinding
electric motors, struggling up steep hills, of long, dark streetcar tunnels
burrowing through the earth.
While the remaining rail lines in operation in San Francisco still possess much of the flavor---to which has been added an over coating of PCC modernity---much of the glamour lies locked up irretrievably in the past.
But the not so distant past
at that. The great transformation which
has obliterated Market Street Railway tracks within the past eight years has
done its work with a speed only equaled in a few other American cities.
The events since the merger
of 29 September 1944 in the field of San Francisco streetcar operations
comprise a highly complicated and a rather eccentric bit of history. The many temporary routes, the brief
rerouting of old Muni lines onto Market Street Railway trackage, the
curtailments at certain portions of the day and the week only, all combine to
make the picture exceedingly varied.
There has long been a need to record with precision and detail the exact happenings that have caused this transformation. It is to be hoped that this chronology will satisfy the demand, and will serve also to recapture the portion of the “San Francisco flavor” that has been sacrificed in different modes of public transportation.
-Laurence R. Veysey
Principal source used in compiling the chronologies
has been the Annual Report of the San Francisco Public Utilities
Commission, 1944-49. Route guides of
1940, 1945, 1946 and 1949 have also been of assistance. Occasional issues of Interurbans have
supplied bits of information.
